'Good' Teacher, 'Good' Student

Level: Pre-intermediate and above
Duration: 30 to 50 minutes.
Skill(s) Targeted: Listening, speaking and some writing
Aim: To establish classroom rules and promote class unity through discussion, negotiation and example

Students Need to Know: “should” for desirability

Procedure:

::..Step 1..::

Depending on the level of the class, put a suitable heading on the left hand side of the board, e.g. “a good teacher should …”

Elicit plenty of ideas from the class and board them all. With higher level groups students could work in pairs or small groups first.

Board all students’ suggestions. The students may come up with…

A good teacher should…

…never give homework

…always arrive at class on time

…be energetic and motivating

…be fair

…should speak clearly

…let students out of class early

…is always prepared


::..Step 2..::

Tell the class they’re now going to make another list and elicit “a good student should…”

Elicit plenty of ideas from the class and board all students’ suggestions. The students may come up with…

A good student should…

…come to class when he likes

…never do homework

…speak Turkish when he likes

…be well prepared

…always bring a dictionary to class


::..Step 3..::

Now negotiate with the class and produce and amend the lists accordingly. You will end up with lists that reflect your (and the institution’s) classroom rules.

A good teacher should…(will)

Set homework on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays

Label some H/Wk “must do”/”if you want”

Return homework promptly

Arrive on time

A good student should…(will)

Do all “must do” homework

Hand in homework assignments on time

Arrive on time

Notes :

1.     Consider a mother tongue version for lower levels.

2.     Consider writing up (or having students write up) the class rules as a wall poster.

3.     Relate the negotiated rules to the institution Code of Practice (could be done next day).

4.     Discuss non-negotiable rules if you haven’t already negotiated them!

5.     Stick to the rules!
